Oldenzaal is the home of grönefeld exclusive timepieces. With roots dating back to the year 700 the town received its charter in 1249. The company’s headquarters have been located nearby the ancient basilica tower since 1912. The Netherlands has a rich horological history: Christiaan Huyghens (1629-1695) was a world renowned dutch polymath: philosopher, lutenist, scientist, composer and inventor. He discovered the pendulum for regulating clocks and implemented the balance spring. Without these discoveries, wristwatches could not exist. Johan Grönefeld began his career as a watchmaker in 1912. In 1953 his son, Sjef Grönefeld joined him as a watchmaker. Later taking over the family business in 1974. This was just the begining of a talented dynasty of Grönefeld watchmakers which reaches to the present day. With Sjef’s sons Bart & Tim Grönefeld. the workshop is still in the same building as the one used by their great grandfather Johan Grönefeld. Representing a continuous and unbroken watchmaking family history. Exceptionally rare in the world today. After many years of training in switzerland Tim & Bart Grönefeld were recognized as world specialists of the most exquisite horological creation: the minute repeater wristwatch. This complex timekeeper is able to tell the time through the use of tiny gongs and hammers. First chiming the hours followed by the quarter hour and minutes. Only a handfull of watchmakers in the world are able to deal with horological creations comprising this type of complexity. Grönefeld Exclusive Timepieces is the very first in Holland’s history able to offer a grand complication wristwatch of this extreme level of mechanical intricacy.
